The Auditory-Verbal Center (AVC) is a nonprofit center in Atlanta that
teaches children who are mildly hearing impaired to profoundly deaf to
listen and speak so that they can succeed in mainstream schools and
experience lives without limitation. Founded in 1977, it is one of only
two such centers in the United States. Most of AVC’s child clients, ages
five and older, upon completion of Auditory-Verbal therapy, can attend
regular schools with no additional resources or help. This is not a common
practice in deaf education but affords these children the opportunity to
develop and mature with their social peers. It also represents an enormous
savings in taxpayer dollars.
